Yoga with Jo

A little bit of background...
What style of Yoga do you teach?
I have been practicing Yoga for 30 years, I started my 500hr Yoga teacher training course 8 years ago and have been teaching for 6 years and I am still learning through CPD opportunities.
Recently I became certified to teach Yoga for the stages of the
Menopause. The Yoga I teach is mostly Hatha Yoga.
It is non-competitive and suitable for everyone! Yoga gives you a chance to turn your awareness inwards and listen to your body.
It is about connecting the mind, body and breath - a practice of
self-discovery rather than comparison.
We are all different so adaptations and modifications are always provided to make the pose work for your body.

Is Yoga a Religion?
Yoga is not a religion; it is a philosophy that began in India over 5000 years ago. You do not have to be religious or surrender your own religious beliefs to practice Yoga.
It is inclusive of everyone.

What sort of classes are available?
I teach General Hatha Yoga classes which are suitable for most people and I also teach Gentle Yoga classes which incorporate all the same elements, but the class is slightly shorter. We go at a slower, gentler pace with less “getting up and down” from the floor. Some people like to use chairs and, in the future, I would like to introduce a specific Chair
Yoga class to the schedule. I already teach Chair based Yoga at two local care homes.

What are the benefits of Yoga?
A Yoga practice has benefits for all the bodily systems, but they will vary from one person to another. Generally, Yoga helps to improve mobility, flexibility and builds strength in the body and helps reduce stress and anxiety.
Can I do Yoga if I am not flexible?
Yes, definitely! Yoga really is for everyone and you don’t have to be able to touch your toes!

And a little more information...
What can I expect in a class?
I teach Hatha Yoga classes that are friendly, nurturing
and suitable for everyone. My sessions encompass
most aspects of Yogic practice, not just the physical
postures. Each class consists of a blend of:
mindfulness, poetry and readings, breath awareness,
movement, asana (Yoga poses), Pranayama (breath
work) and always end in Savasana with a relaxation
in the form of a guided meditation, visualisation or
Yoga Nidra- so that you leave the class refreshed and relaxed.
What should I wear to a class?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of
movement. You don’t have to wear leggings! Jogging bottoms or shorts are also fine.
We usually practice Yoga barefoot
What do I need to bring to a class?
You will need a Yoga mat, but I do have a few that can be borrowed when you first start. You can bring some water if you need to sip it in class.
If you have your own, a couple of Yoga blocks and a strap or tie, but again I have plenty of spares that can be borrowed. Most importantly you will want a blanket and warm clothing for a cosy relaxation at the end of the class!
Should I fill out a medical form?
Yes please, before your first class with me I will ask
you to complete a confidential health form.
This is so I am aware of any issues that may affect
your practice. However, if you have a health
condition you should seek advice from your GP
before coming to class.
